When you are in your late teens and you are about to Start College in a year or two, the pressure starts to build up. The pressure of earning money, saving money and plan the finances that will be required in the future. Also, children of that age group (15, 16, 17, and 18 years old) have this never-ending list of the stuff that they want.
And that list requires MONEY!
They want the latest gadgets; they want the best of the rooms, the expensive musical instruments, branded clothes and makeup, and so on. Well, I have only one thing to say; if you can wish for all of these things, you surely CAN work for these things as well.
If you are wondering:
How to make money when you are 15, 16, 17, and 18 years old?
Then, this post has the answer to your question. There are a number of opportunities and platforms that teenagers can endorse to make money.
It feels nice to earn your own money; you can do whatever you want with your money and you will not be answerable to your parents for every penny that you spend. Secondly, I understand how teenagers want to buy the latest mobile phone, the expensive camera and all the electronic gadgets (to say the least!).
What if I tell you that you can purchase everything with your own money? Yes, it is true!
If you are a teenager looking for ways to earn money and cover all of your costs and expenses, then read on!
How to earn money as a teenager?
The world is full of opportunities for teenagers. There are endless jobs and ways through which you can make money. From doing online jobs to downloading money paying apps, from doing handy work to learning a new skill; the possibilities are endless.
So, without any further delay let’s start discussing all the ways!
Many people are afraid of trying out the apps that claim to pay you for doing literally nothing. Sure there are scams but there are some legit apps as well that really do pay you for either just surfing the web or completing a set of easy tasks.
Swagbucks is one such app that is one of my top recommendations. It pays the users for surfing the web, watching online videos, playing games, taking surveys and even shopping. You just need to download the app, sign up (and get a free $5 bonus in your account) and either complete tasks or just do what you already do (like surfing the web and watching videos) and make money in return.
Once you do all of this you will earn Swagbucks (SB) points. These points are gathered in a bank and once you reach a minimum amount, you can easily redeem them for a gift card or even direct cash that can be withdrawn through PayPal.
Trust me, it is easy money! You literally have to do nothing more than you were already doing and you will save and earn money. I have done several other detailed posts on
You can have a look and learn more about easy ways of making money and also know about apps that are not a scam and will pay you in return.
SwagBucks is one of the most trusted and renowned applications. If you have some free time on your hands or even only on the weekends; you can just use your phone and earn money. This is a great way to earn if you are a 15, 16, 17, and 18 years old with not many options to choose from!
#2 Start cleaning
It may sound like a lot of work or something that you wouldn’t want to do but believe me it is a very well paid job.
You can look around your neighborhood and volunteer to clean people’s cars and houses on a weekly basis. Cleaning labor is rare and people are always in need of a reliable and dedicated worker. You can offer your services and make money.
You can also get leaflets printed to distribute door to door so that people may contact you once they need cleaning services. Remember, the more you advertise about your work and availability the more will be the chances of you earning more money.
Also, make sure that whatever you are cleaning is a safe job. I remember when I was in college and I used to clean houses for that extra pocket money, I was told to clean the outdoor windows of the house. I fell off the ladder and was injured. So, make sure that whatever you do is safe and age-appropriate.
The professional companies that provide maids for cleaning houses usually charge around $40 dollars per hour. You can increase your client base by providing quality work at cheaper rates. You can also ask your family and friends to put in a good word for you.
#3 Hold a garage sale
If you are a teenager and looking for ways to make extra money, then this is a great idea. Look around your room; do you have something that you no longer need or like?
Maybe, a branded shirt or shoes that no longer fit you, a classic record, a gaming console, a musical instrument, your old books or toys?
You can always sell all of these items that you no longer want and make money! You can either hold a garage sale or let everyone in the vicinity know about the sale. Or you can post pictures of the items you want to sell online and sell them digitally.
Social media has a lot of power and it can provide the exposure and coverage you need to sell your stuff and make money!
Another great tip regarding selling one’s stuff is that: don’t sell all of your stuff at once. Sell it off one by one because less money you will have the less you will eventually spend.
Also, make sure that all the items you are selling are reasonably priced. The general rule of thumb is that when selling used items, you charge 10% of the retail price. If the product being sold is big such as a bicycle, musical instrument, etc. and is in good condition then you can charge a little extra too! But always remember that you want to attract customers and not shun them away!
Try to include your siblings and parents into the sale as well and ask them if they have something that they would like to sell.
#4 Take online surveys.
There are so many online platforms that pay their customers for giving loyal advice. You can log on to any of them and earn money by taking simple surveys.
These surveys can be about any product or service that is newly launched in the market or is in the manufacturing process. Your valuable feedback is important for companies and brands that are a part of such platforms.
You can easily make money by taking online surveys (Which are simple and short and won’t take more than 10 minutes of your time). The more surveys you take, the more money you will make. You will earn points for each survey and the more points you earn, the more money you will be able to make.

If you like to share your opinion then why not share it for money?
#5 Set up a stall
There are so many farmers market arranged on every weekend. You can easily get a stall at the farmer’s market. Every state has different farmer market laws and it is better to check those before getting a stall.
Adults setting up the stall have to pay for it, but children below a certain age limit can set up a stall for free, but it is still better to check. Once you get the stall, the next step is to decide what you will be selling.
You can obviously sell home grown vegetables and if you don’t have any even then the opportunities are endless, such as:
- Bake stuff.
- Homemade jams, jellies, and pickles
- Set up a pizza station (with the help of elders) and rolls put fresh pizzas and sell them for a profit at the market.
Even if you have other stuff to sale such as organic spices, honey, breads etc. you can always sell them and make money. You can do this over the weekends and make easy money.
#6 Become a babysitter
I think that babysitting is a great way to make money as a teenager. You have time on your hands, you are old and sensible enough to look after smaller kids and you can do that to make money.
You can also go through workshops and training sessions to get trained to handle babies and once you do that you will be a certified baby sitter.
It is not easy work I must tell you. It will take a lot of hard work and dedication from your side to handle kids but trust me the payback is really good.
Especially during the holiday season when people are busy with so many commitments and need someone to look after their kids, babysitting is a particularly beneficial job. Doing a job like this is a great way to instill confidence, discipline, and people skill in you. You get organized and focused on life.
#7 Become a pet sitter
If handling babies is not your cup of tea and you would rather do something else then try looking after pets. Almost everyone owns a pet and needs someone to look after them when they are busy, traveling or just away from home.
If you have a love for animals and think that you will be able to handle pets then it is a great way to earn money. You can ask around your friends and family if they need a pet sitter and also advertise your services by distributing flyers.
You can charge per hour of your services and if you are finding it hard to land clients and customers then you can join platforms such as Care.com, where people log in to check if a baby sitter and pet sitter is available.
You can look after other people’s pets either at their place or your own. But always make sure that whatever you do or decide to do your parents know what you will be doing and where you will be working.
#8 Become a house-sitter
You can also simply look after people’s houses if they are away. Most people are traveling and want someone to watch over their homes. You can do that for them.
Always remember that you should agree to house sit for people who you know or someone among your friends and family knows about them. I will not recommend the house sitting for a total stranger for obvious safety concerns.
Different types of people want different types of house sitting services. For example, some might want you to go to their house every day and see if everything is okay, while some may want you to go and spend 1-2 hours at the place daily and some might want you to stay their full time.
Every kind of service will have different charges and if you can manage sitting houses then you will be able to make good money as a teenager. You can also take along your books and just study while you are there.
#9 Walk dogs
If you are 15, 16, 17 or 18 years old and you own a dog or are good with dogs; then you can walk multiple dogs at the same time and make money.
Chances are that you own a dog of your own and you go out for walking your dog anyways so why not walk multiple dogs at the same time and make money. You can ask your friends, family, and neighbors if they need someone to walk their dog and you can then offer your services.
You can also register yourself with multiple platforms to gain maximum customers. The more dogs you walk, the more money you will be able to make. There are many people who are willing to pay a decent amount of money for walking their dogs twice or thrice a week.
You can always prepare flyers and distribute them for added promotion and marketing.
#10 Wash Cars
This is a very easy approach and you will be able to earn money by investing just a little bit of time and effort.
You can even just go around washing cars over the weekend or every alternate day (whatever you can manage with school). The great thing about washing cars is that you won’t require any special equipment; all you will need is soap, a bucket, some towels and you are done.
If you will be cleaning the indoor of the cars as well then it is better to invest in a portable vacuum cleaner. Some people are also willing to provide all the materials to wash their cars, so you can charge them a little less.
You can set your rates on a per hour basis and make good money in a little time.
If you want to get more customers, you can also go door to door and wash cars instead of waiting for people to show up at your car wash station.
It is all about facilitating the customers and helping them with their chores. Only then they will be willing to pay you money instead of going to the professionals for the services. Provide quality work at good rates to earn good money.
#11 Become a handyman
By definition, a handyman is who can sort out little chores and jobs for you. Many people don’t need someone to clean their houses for them but someone who can help them de-clutter and organize their space.
You can offer your services to organize the garage, stores and other places of the house. Many people want to organize and introduce structure into their home space but are clueless about where to start from and how to do it. You can offer your services in such a scenario and help them organize their homes.
You can charge per hour and earn money this way. If you have what it takes to organize cluttered and messy places then this is the job for you. I remember when I was in college; I had a friend who was always reading interior decoration magazines. She later got into helping people introduce structure in their homes and she even began her own home makeover business later.
You can look at the place at the start and inform the customer about how much time it will take to organize their space. If both of you agree on the time and rate then you can continue with the job.
#12 Set up a pop stall
This is a very simple and easy approach to making money. If it is the summers; just whip up some lemonade in your home and start selling it in your front yard.
You can also sell baked goodies and make some profit. You can also involve your mother into this business and ask her to help you prepare stuff that you can sell later on.
It is always a wise idea to keep some other miscellaneous items as well at the stall. When people will stop over for a glass of lemonade or for a bottle of water, they might purchase some extra stuff too such as headbands, bows, bracelets, DIY jewelry and jewelry stand and so much more.
I also have another idea but you will need to involve your parents in it. During the peak holiday season or sales season; you can set up a pop-up stall outside malls and in the shopping places. You can sell snacks and drinks and trust me people will buy! Whenever I am out shopping, I get so hungry by the end of it all that some nice food is always welcomed!
#13 Work tables at a restaurant.
This is something that students of high school have been doing for ages and is something everyone can manage. It is a great way to earn the extra pocket money that everyone needs and wants.
You can work at any restaurant or café and serve people as a waiter and earn money. Not to forget the extra tips that you will be getting as a bonus. Also, you can select the time slot that suits you the best and work accordingly. When you are free you can work and earn money.
You can also work at ice cream parlors and scoop out ice-cream, you can work at grocery stores and stock shelves, help with loading and unloading the material and also work in offices and administration departments to help with basic computer work and other filing jobs.
Always remember, that there is no work too big or small for anyone. You can do anything and everything that you put your heart and soul into. If you don’t like serving people on the tables, you can work as a cashier or any fast-food chain where you will be taking orders and handing them their food.
If you think you can work in a restaurant, you can also look for jobs in the kitchen. You might be able to get some cutting job at the start and you can always move forward from there. Especially if you want to take up cooking as a profession, you can be able to get so much experience and exposure from such a young age!
#14 Be a mother helper
At the start, I mentioned about becoming a baby sitter but there are so many 15, 16, 17, and 18 years old that are scared about being with the kids alone. So if this is the case with you as well, then you can always become a mother or father helper.
This is different from being a baby sitter and also easier because in this case the mother or father of the children is usually home and they only require extra help or assistance with the kids. For example, you can help the kids with the homework, play with them, and help the adults fold the laundry, tidy up their rooms or cook food.
#15 Learn a skill
Whenever I write down posts regarding ways that help you earn money; I always mention this one because this is gold. When you learn a skill, you don’t only earn money for that time period but you are able to make money throughout your life.
You can learn so many things. It is not necessary that you learn only the stuff that is mentioned in your books. You can learn many different skills like painting, playing a musical instrument, sewing, knitting or any other skill.
You can also learn some other technical skills such as motor skills; repairing a bike or bicycle. You can also mend cars, change tires and work at the gas station. But whatever you decide to learn will always stay with you and you will be able to earn through them all through your life.
You can also learn how to embroider or sew clothes and later sell your products. You can learn how to knit and sell them for a profit. I have a friend who learned how to knit from her granny when she was 15 and has been knitting ever since.
At first, she started off with simple items such as caps, mittens, and coasters and later moved on to knitting blankets, cushion covers, tea sets and so much more. She used to sell her products online on Facebook but now has a very successful and famous store on Etsy. She makes thousands of dollars every year through her online shop.
So, no work is too difficult or too small rather you can learn anything and make it big and that skill will always stay with you. I learned how to play the piano when I was in 8 grade and used to play it at a hotel on weekends. I used to get a monthly stipend along with the tips that people used to give every time I played. I am still giving piano lessons to little kids and earn money from it.
#16 Become a delivery guy
You can help businesses and restaurants deliver food and products and you can earn money. You can either register yourself with apps or ask if the local restaurants if they need someone to deliver food for them.
You can be the pizza guy or deliver other groceries and earn money. You will also be able to earn tips from the people you will be delivering stuff too, which is always a plus.
#17 Paint houses
If you have free time on your hands, you can always ask around and see if someone needs painting services. You can paint fences, houses, interiors and exteriors and cars to make money.
All the time and effort that you will be spending doing work for people you will be paid in return.
#18 Become a tutor
If you know a subject really well and will be able to teach other kids the same subject; you can make money.
Many parents are looking for a reliable and competent tutor to teach their kids and help them pass the exams. You can also tutor different kids and earn money. Most of the times parents are so desperate to get their kids to pass the exams that they are even willing to pay big amounts of money. You can also make some really good money by tutoring kids.
You can also mentor them regarding sports and help them with anything that they are finding difficult and falling behind. You can help them prepare essays and polish their extra-curricular skills.
#19 Be artsy
If you have an artistic edge to your personality and can create products then you can also sell them and earn a profit.
If there is DIY stuff that you can create, paint or can create other digital products then you can make good money.
You can set up an online shop and sell your products. I personally prefer digital products over physical products because you don’t need an inventory for them and also don’t need to go through the shipment hassle.
Whatever it is that you are creating you can easily sell it and make money. Also, whatever you set up at this age will only evolve and grow over time and by the time you are out of school, you will already have a successful business up and running! Isn’t it just great?
#20 Get a paper route
Just like you see in the movies, you can also get a paper route and distribute newspapers in the morning before you head to school.
Working as a paper guy can be difficult. You will have NO days off and no matter what the weather conditions out there, you will have to work. But it is a great way to make money as a teenager and people also give nice tips.
I am sure there will be many other ways as well through which you can make money but these are my top picks.
Always remember that whatever you do should be with full commitment and dedication.
Also, let me know in the comments below if you can think of some other ways to make money as a teenager. Are you a teenager and making money? Let me know what works for you and what are your top tips to make money as a school going kid? I would love to hear from you!
