How to earn money with email marketing and Pinterest
First of all, I want to briefly explain to you how this method works and then we can start going into details. You will create a Pinterest business account (if you do not have it already), then you will set up boards and join group boards. After that, you will join Constant Contact and create a landing page (the page where visitors will enter their emails).
When you are done with that you will create Pins that stand out and pin them on Pinterest. When you will collect enough emails you can start promoting your offers to them. In this guide, you will also learn how to write a perfect e-mail copy.
That’s essentially all you will have to do in order to get your affiliate commissions. If some of the terms that I mentioned above confused you, don’t worry as I will explain everything in detail in the article.
Are you ready to learn how to make money on Pinterest with email marketing?!? Let’s go!
#1 – Setting up a business Pinterest account
For everybody that does not know, Pinterest is a social media platform like Facebook or Instagram. The only big difference is that on Pinterest we share so-called »pins«. Pins are images or videos you make and pin to boards. They are usually vertical in a scale 2:3.
If you do not have an account yet go to the Pinterest page or app and create one. It is a very simple step and it will take you only a couple of minutes. To create a business account you click the 3 dots in the corner of the Pinterest page (make sure to be in the browser and not in the app), and click »Add a free business account«.
After that you can click the get »started button«. You will have to choose your business name and your main niche. If it will ask you to provide a website address and if you don’t have it, it’s ok. Just skip that step or add a random website that you can remove later.
After you complete all this steps you have a Pinterest business account. Now you have to optimize your Pinterest account so it will get viewed by more people and eventually you will also earn more.
#2 – Optimizing Pinterest account for SEO
*SEO – Search Engine Optimization
First of all you have to choose your niche if you didn’t already. When you are choosing a niche I advise you to choose between the most popular niches on Pinterest. You definitely don’t want to choose a niche that nobody is interested in, right? Here is a list of the most popular Pinterest niches:
- House and home
- Travel & Places
Now you can start with optimizing your Pinterest account. You can start by optimizing your profile. First of all, you have to add a profile picture. Pinterest users want to see who manages the account so it is better if you put a clear selfie as your profile picture.
If you really do not want to put your photo, you can make a logo on https://logomakr.com/ or hire someone on Fiverr to make it for you. When you upload the profile picture you can start doing keyword research for your »Display name & about your profile« section (see picture below).
You may ask me now, how do I do keyword research? It is very simple and I have 2 methods to do that:
- Type in the search box on Pinterest any word that comes to your mind that is connected to your niche. When you type a word, Pinterest will suggest some keywords with that word in it. Those keywords are commonly searched terms on Pinterest, and you should definitely include them in your »about your profile« box. For example I am in the money-making niche and if I type »how to make money« (see image bellow) Pinterest will suggest me commonly searched terms that I can use in my profile & pin description.
- For the second method to find good keywords I like to use Pinterest Ads. Don’t worry, you don’t have to pay anything, you are only going to use the software in Pinterest Ads to find awesome keywords that are trending right now. Go to the right corner in your browser where it says ads (if you don’t have the business account yet you are not going to see it), and click create ad. Scroll down till you find the »keywords« section. In the search box, you can type any word that you want. You can also use the same one as you did in the first step. Always make sure that the keywords are connected with your niche. In my case, I will type »money« in the search box (see image below). Now I got many new relevant keywords and I also can see the monthly searches which tell me how popular a keyword is. Now I can copy these keywords into my profile description.
After you found all the keywords and added them to your profile you can start creating Boards. Boards are different topics and sections where you will save your pins. To create a board go to your profile click boards and create a new board. For the name of the board, you should add a popular searched term using the 1st method I described above.
After you create a board you have to edit it. You will have to do this process with every board you create. Click the pen icon 🖋️. A window will pop up where you will have to edit the description & category of the board. The description should include all the keywords that you think are relevant to the name of the boards. Pinterest doesn’t like keyword stuffing so try to make real sentences that include your selected keywords.
You are now ready to…
#3 – Set up a landing page in Constant Contact
Constant contact is an e-mail autoresponder. That means, that it automatically sends emails to your subscribers, but not only that you can also create amazing landing pages and you also get many other things in the software, like…
You will use landing pages to collect emails from visitors. Creating a landing page with constant contact is very simple. First, sign up with Constant Contact (Get a FREE 30 days trial), and verify your e-mail address. (NO Credit Card required)
When you are in the software click the »Campaigns« and »Create« button.
Select »Landing Page«
Click on »Lead Generation Landing Page«
Name your sign up form & click on »Content«
Now you can edit the landing page. You can add your logo, change the headline, description and button text. But probably now you are asking yourself, what do I write in the headline & description? I always suggest you always give something before expecting to get from others.
You can offer your visitors a 7-Day free course or a guide in exchange for their email address. For example, you choose the fitness niche. You can create a simple guide on »how to lose weight« or maybe »best exercises to lose weight«, with the information that is on the internet.
Just do a simple google search and gather information from different websites and write a simple guide in a PDF or Word document (it will take you only 20 – 30 minutes). And now you can share your new mini-course or guide in exchange for your visitor’s emails.
So if we get back to the landing page headline & description, what should you write in there? If you are in the fitness niche you could write »7-day mini-course for losing weight« in the headline and in the description you can write shortly what is going to be included in the mini-course. If you choose another niche the headline and description will be different. Try to be creative.
Before you publish your landing page click on »settings« and choose the list you want to add new contacts to.
If you do not have any list available, go create a new one. To create a new list go to »Contacts«.
Click the + sign next to »email lists« and give your new list a name.
You can publish your landing page that you will promote on Pinterest. Now that you have your landing page is time to create amazing looking pins that will go viral on Pinterest.
#4 – Creating Viral pins on Pinterest
Creating a pin is and should be an easy process. I always use Photoshop to make my pins but if you don’t have it you can use a great alternative called Canva. Canva provides you all the tools needed to create good looking pins.
In this guide, I will not teach you how to use Canva because it is very easy to learn. There are also many guides online if you will need help.
Let’s analyze some of my viral pins to see why they performed so well so that you can copy my strategies and make viral pins also.
This is e.g. my best performing pin right now. It brought me more than 3,500 visits to my site. And what makes this pin so special? The headline & background picture. The pin itself is very simple, but the headline grabs your attention. The pin says that I reveal a method nobody talks about which means that it is very secret.
And let’s be honest, everybody is curious, that is why people clicked on it. Because they want to know the secret and they also want to take advantage of the method.
The smiling lady in the background is giving a positive feeling. Which also results in more clicks.
By testing a lot I found out that this are the factors to make a pin go viral:
- Eye-catching design (make it different from your competition & use bright colors).
- Add your logo and website domain name
- Include someone smiling in the photo (improves click-through-rate on every pin)
- Include a call to action (e.g. CLICK HERE, READ MORE, REPIN FOR LATER)
- Write an eye-catching title (e.g. HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT IN 3 DAYS)
- Write a unique description with calls to action and many relevant keywords.
These points will not apply for every niche, but you always have to know that your pin has to be eye-catching. And you will find if the pin is interesting only by testing a looooot. You have to test to see what works for you.
After you created your pin you also have to find a good pinning strategy. I found out that good posting/pinning hours are between 2 and 4 pm EST and 8 pm to 1 am EST. I pin around 20 pins per day. But again, you have to test to see what works for you.
Now that you created your pins is time to…
#5 – Choose the right affiliate offer
You created an amazing Pinterest business account, signed up for Constant Contact & created a landing page, wrote your short mini-course and created amazing looking viral pins. To make money you now have to choose an affiliate offer to promote. Affiliate offers are products or services from other companies that you promote through your own unique link, and make a commission for every sale or lead you bring to that company.
Affiliate marketing is the easiest way to make money online today. You just refer a product to others and get paid. And you don’t even have to sell your own products. Isn’t that amazing?
To find good affiliate offers I like to use ShareASale. But you can also use other affiliate networks like Maxbounty, JVzoo, Clickbank or CJ Affiliate.
When you sign up for these platforms make sure to tell them in detail how you will promote their offers, because if you don’t they are not going to accept you in.
When choosing an offer to promote make sure that is has a high EPC (earnings per 100 click) compared to other offers and that it also has a good payout percentage. You will get all this information about the affiliate offer when you search for merchants on an affiliate platform like ShareASale.
#6 – Sending e-mails to subscribers
Congrats you almost finished everything. In this last step, I will show you how you can automate that when anyone signs on your landing page, he/she gets automatically their mini-course or guide. If your course is longer you can also send it over 3,4,5,6,7… days.
After you send the course you can also send them the e-mail with the affiliate offer. Make sure the affiliate offer can solve their problem e.g. want to lose weight. The process to set up the automated e-mails may seem difficult, but is really not. Click here to watch the video and learn how to do it.
1. Create a Pinterest business account and optimize it with keywords
2. Sign up for Constant Contact & create a landing page
3. Create mini-course or guide to give for free in exchange for e-mail addresses
4. Create good-looking pins and pin them to relevant boards
5. Choosing an affiliate offer for your niche
6. Sending emails to subscribers
